Tattoo became part of the signature for military personal in the II World War. The pledge to stay with your outfit or to demonstrate commitment to the country couldn't be displayed better than a piece of artwork that never faded away. This type of fraternity between sailors and other military personal grew in popularity. Today it is still seen among college students who pledge loyalty to fraternity chapters often display tattoos to show their support.

Many "pledge" tattoos are common among many different types of crowds. However, the booming impact of them throughout the 1940's and 1950's, brought tattoo into the mainstream of society. Many men displayed them proudly, later telling their children about the wars they had fought and the friends that they had lost, all based on a single tattoo marking a time in their lives. Time marking types of tattoo are so common, if you ask today why someone has a certain tattoo you may hear a story of how that tattoo marked a certain time frame in their personal life.

The most common tattoo displayed by military personal is that of "Lady Luck," their unit, military division, and the American eagle. Tattoo shops were generally located in the docks of the city so that they could tattoo the incoming military personal. The tattoo shops soon discovered that this part of town also gave them the criminal element of society as well, and soon many of the tattooed were criminals.
